Bangalore airport services over 33 million passengers in 2019

Bangalore’s Kempegowda International Airport has continued its yearly growth with 33.65 million passengers in 2019, a 4.1% increase from 2018’s 32.33 million.

Indigo continued to be the largest carrier at Bangalore with their passenger figures rising by 13.0% from 13.81 mppa in 2018 to 15.61 mppa in 2019 representing 48% of the total passengers through Bangalore.

International passenger traffic grew 14.0% from 4.27 million in 2018 to 4.87 million in 2019. While domestic traffic grew by 2.6% from 28.05 million in 2018 to 28.78 million in 2019.

Air Transport Movements

ATMs in 2019 reduced by 0.1% to 235,058 as compared 235,190 of 2018.

International movements grew by 13.0% to 30,556 ATMs from 26,966 ATMs in 2018. Domestic movements reduced by 1.8% to 204,502 ATMs from 208,224 ATMs in 2018.

Cargo

Total cargo processed in 2019 dropped by 1% with international cargo reducing by 4.1% and domestic cargo showing a 4.1% growth.

Terminal getting crowded?

The current terminal 1 at Bangalore airport has a rated capacity of 20 mppa which is well exceded by the 33.65 million passengers in 2019. The first phase of the new terminal 2 at the airport will add capacity for another 20 mppa bringing the airport’s total to 40 mppa.

Considering the current growth rate of the airport, Bangalore Airport may have to consider accelerating their schedule for phase 2 of the new terminal 2 which is currently scheduled to complete only in 2026.
