Japan Airlines (JAL) has taken delivery of its first ever Airbus aircraft – an A350-900 at a special delivery ceremony at the manufacturers plant in Toulouse, France.

Airbus secured JALs order for the A350 in 2013, breaking into a national stronghold of rival Boeing. The airline currently operates an all Boeing fleet of 737s, 767s, 787s and 777s. JAL has a total of 31 A350s on order, comprising of 18 A350-900s for its domestic operations and 13 A350-1000s for the airlines long haul network.

The airline will operate the newly delivered aircraft on domestic routes currently operated by Boeing 737s and 777s. The first domestic flight will be on 1 September 2019 from Tokyo Haneda airport to Fukuoka airport.

While details of the cabin have not yet been announced, the aircraft is configured with 369 seats in three classes – 12 first class seats in a 2-2-2 configuration, 94 business class seats in a 2-4-2 configuration and 263 economy class seats in a 3-3-3 configuration.
