Metrojet Airbus A321 crashes over the Sinai #7K9268

A Airbus A321 of Russian carrier MetroJet (Kogalymavia) crashed about 25 minutes after takeoff over the Sinai peninsula in Egypt. The aircraft was performing flight 7K 9268 from Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg. The aircraft was carrying 224 people including 17 children and seven crew.

Egyptian officials have said that most onboard are believed to be dead.

The aircraft was EI-ETJ was a 19 year old Airbus A321 which was powered by two IAE V2533-A5 engines and was first delivered to MEA – Middle East Airlines in May of 1997. The aircraft was delivered to it’s current operator in March of 2012.

  1. Why do airlines use so old aircraft ? Isn’t there any policy of restricting use of very old aircrafts ? Even Indian Airlines have old aircrafts now flying under Air India badge. After a plane covers X nm, the aircraft should be pulled out from the service.
