Malaysia Airlines equips its A330 pilots with iPad Air electronic flight bags

National carrier, Malaysia Airlines is equipping its Airbus A330 fleet with electronic flight bags consisting of Apple’s iPad Air tablets installed with electronic navigation charts from Lufthansa Systems and integrating the Airbus Flysmart application.

The iPad will replace the bulky hard copy charts, route navigation, and other information with a paperless cockpit solution containing all the information required for routes and airports, from take-off to landing. The software allows for improved access and quick retrieval of flight information and documents such as charts, airport maps, high level en-route navigation charts etc., which saves time compared to manually searching in bulky paper manuals. The information is presented in a streamlined and convenient manner which increases operational efficiency and enhances safety of flight operations.

The software also automates large portions of the flight preparation activities which reduces chances for miscalculations.

Malaysia Airlines is ahead of other airlines in the Asia Pacific area in implementing the Apple iPad for flight crew solutions in the flight deck.
