Mumbai airport’s new terminal T2 commences international operations today

Following its inauguration in January, the new 4.4 million square feet integrated Terminal 2 (T2) at Mumabi’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA), will commence international operations today.

The transition of all international flights from the existing terminal to the new T2 will begin with the arrival of Air India’s flight from Singapore AI343 scheduled at 1300 hours. The first departing flight will be Jet Airways 9W118 to London Heathrow at 1320 hours, for which check in counters will open at 0920 hours.

Cut-over time

The cut-over time for transition to the new terminal is 13:00 (1 pm). All international flights scheduled to departing before this time will be from the old terminal and all departures scheduled after the cut-over time will be from the new terminal. Similarly, all flights arriving before 12 noon will be at the old terminal and after 12 noon will be at the new terminal.

Domestic flights unaffected

Domestic terminal flights and transfers will be unaffected by this transition.

New access roads and lanes

T2 is connected to the Western Express Highway via the new dedicated signal free corridor, the Sahar elevated access road (SEAR). It can be used by private cars, taxis and special dedicated coaches only. SEAR will bring vehicles to level 4 of the terminal which is meant for departures.

Visitors coming to receive arriving passengers will have to arrive at level 4, park their cars in the nine floor multi-level car parking (MLCP) facility, and then enter the terminal from level 2, receive their guests, bring them back to the vehicle at the MLCP, load up and then leave.

For passengers arriving into T2, private car pick-up and hotel limo-taxi pick-up provisions are available at level 2. Prepaid taxi and special coach services are available at Level 1. For three-wheelers auto and city bus service, passengers will have to cross Level 2 to designated pick up points.

In case you were wondering why the gap between the inauguration and the operational commencement? During the last few weeks since the terminal underwent a comprehensive security sweep as well as the final stages of ORAT (Operational Readiness Activation and Transition). The ORAT tests all the systems, processes and people so a detailed familiarisation was conducted for airlines, ground handling staff, security, customs, immigration and MIAL employees to help get them acquainted with the terminal building and all its new systems.
