The Aviation Herald reports a Japan Airlines Boeing 747-400, registration JA8922 performing flight JL061 from Los Angeles LAX, USA to Tokyo Narita Japan with 245 passengers and 17 crew, had just pushed back and had its engines running at taxiway C between taxiways C10 and P, when engine number 1 (the outer left) sucked a luggage container into its inlet.
The engines had to be shut down and the passengers disembarked. The flight had to be cancelled.
The FAA reported, that a luggage cart with an empty container was just being towed nearby, when the container was sucked into the engine.
Very few of us realise the power of a jet engine. A fully loaded Boeing 747 weighs in excess of 400 tons at take-off. The video below shows the power of a jet engine’s exhaust. Obviously for air to go out the back it has to be sucked in through the front.
